Bliss
Bliss is profound spiritual joy, the ecstasy of salvation, and the serene gratitude of being.
Bliss is the feeling you might experience when playing with a puppy, enjoying a sunset, or gazing into the eyes of a baby. Awareness of the blessings of the universe inevitably leads to a sense of bliss.
Your personal bliss is a blessing to all. This idea is summarized by Shakespeare: “This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.” Paradoxically, the more you focus on cultivating your bliss, the more of a blessing you will be to others.
Not only is bliss a blessing, "bliss is essential to the survival of sentient life on Earth," as poet Sky so succinctly states. In the past, bliss may have seemed a luxury, but now it becomes ever more apparent that bliss is necessary for our very survival. As the world becomes ever more connected, people who live in fear (outside of bliss) have the means not only to destroy themselves, but to destroy others, even those far away.
To "follow your bliss" is to pursue activities that integrate yourself with the whole in a benevolent way. To "follow your bliss" is not the same as giving in to momentary compulsions. For example, it may seem that eatting an entire chocolate cake is following your bliss, when really such behavior, although it may provide momentary pleasure, will likely make you sick.
